Corn's Quest for World Domination

Kellogg's Special K cereal, Sara Lee Heart Healthy Whole Grain Bread, Kraft Miracle Whip, Oscar Meyer Pickle and Pimento Loaf, Mott's Apple Sauce, HoneyMaid Graham Crackers, Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice, and Robitussin Cough Syrup. No, it's not my grocery shopping list, so what do all of these items have in common? They all are made with high fructose corn syrup. It appears to be bad for us, implicated in America's skyrocketing obesity rate, although the Corn Refiners Association would have you believe otherwise. But, hey, why do I need refined corn in my "whole" grain bread? I'll pass, please. It's hard to avoid, but particularly for those allergic to corn, it's essential to know where it lurks! Kate Hopkins at "The Accidental Hedonist" is compiling a list of products containing HFCS, while William Wolff provides his own useful compilation of Michael Pollan's attempts to explain it all.
